Retreatments
Root canal retreatment may be recommended when a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy does not heal properly or develops a new infection over time. Although root canal treatment is highly successful, certain factors such as complex canal anatomy, delayed crown placement, new decay, cracks, or reinfection can affect the long-term health of the tooth. Retreatment allows us to carefully address the problem, eliminate infection, and give the tooth another opportunity to heal and function properly.
Common signs that a tooth may require retreatment include recurring tooth pain, sensitivity, swelling, tenderness when chewing, or the appearance of an abscess near the treated tooth. In some cases, symptoms may not appear immediately, and issues are only discovered during a routine dental exam or digital imaging. Prompt evaluation is important to prevent the infection from spreading and to preserve the natural tooth whenever possible.
During retreatment, the previous root canal filling material is carefully removed so the inside of the tooth can be thoroughly cleaned and examined. Any hidden canals, residual bacteria, or areas of reinfection are treated before the canals are disinfected and resealed. Depending on the condition of the tooth, a new crown or restoration may also be recommended to provide additional protection and long-term stability.
Our team uses advanced technology and precise techniques to make retreatment as comfortable and effective as possible. We understand that needing additional treatment on the same tooth can feel frustrating, but retreatment is often the best option for saving your natural tooth and avoiding extraction. Preserving the natural tooth helps maintain proper bite alignment, chewing function, and overall oral health.
Following retreatment, most patients experience relief from discomfort and are able to return to normal activities quickly. With proper care, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits, a retreated tooth can continue to function successfully for many years. Our goal is to restore your comfort, protect your oral health, and help you maintain a healthy, confident smile.
